Creating Families for Gay Men Through Egg Donation and Surrogacy
Almost half of same-sex male couples want to have children, and egg donation and surrogacy are among the most preferred paths to parenthood. It’s not just for celebrities! Approximately 5,000 babies are born to same-sex male couples through surrogacy each year in the United States. Over the past 20 years, Northeast Assisted Fertility Group (NAFG) has helped many intended fathers make their dreams of parenthood a reality.
Through our expert guidance and coordination, every component of family building for gay men comes together seamlessly: finding an egg donor, matching with a surrogate, selecting the right IVF clinic, managing contracts, and coordinating every detail from start to finish.
Frequently Asked Questions About Egg Donation and Surrogacy for Gay Men
Is Egg Donation and Surrogacy Legal for Gay Men in the United States?
We work in states favorable to both egg donation and surrogacy; there is no discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.
Do All IVF Clinics Work With Same-Sex Male Couples?
Yes, IVF clinics do not discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation.
Should Gay Men Use Fresh or Frozen Donor Eggs for Surrogacy?
As with any intended parents, this is a matter of personal choice, timing, and cost. Read more about the differences between frozen vs. fresh donor eggs here.
How Is Working With Donor Eggs Different for Same-Sex Male Couples?
For heterosexual couples or single women, there is typically a desire to find an egg donor who looks like the intended mother. This is not an issue for same-sex male couples; they are only limited by their personal preferences.
When each partner wants the chance to be the genetic father, the donor eggs are divided and fertilized separately with each partner’s sperm. In this case, when the aim is for two embryos (at least one for each), it is recommended to start out with more donor eggs than average. So, you would choose to work with fresh donor eggs or at least two batches of frozen donor eggs.
How Is Working With a Surrogate Different for Same-Sex Male Couples?
It’s just like any other intended parents. Many of our surrogates are thrilled to work with same-sex male couples.
What Comes First, Finding an Egg Donor or Matching With a Surrogate? What Does the Timeline Look Like for Gay Men Pursuing Fatherhood Through Third-Party Reproduction?
After the initial consultation with Northeast Assisted Fertility Group (NAFG), you get registered at an IVF clinic and complete the medical screening. Next, you choose donor eggs and create embryos, then get matched with a surrogate. The surrogate gets screened at your IVF clinic, and then the embryo transfer takes place. The whole process takes about a year from start to finish.
